The Ad Hoc Group on Foodborne Viral Infections terms of reference are to – Assess the extent of viral foodborne infection in the UK – with particular reference to norovirus and hepatitis E. Including discussion on the issues surrounding emerging risks. Describe the epidemiology, sources and mode of transfer of foodborne viral infection. Agree a framework outlining the key criteria for assessing the foodborne risks posed by viruses. Review the recommendations from the 1998 report and the Governments' responses. Identify practical options that might exist, or be developed, for the prevention and control of foodborne transmission. Including communication strategies to target the industry and consumers. Assess the implication of new technologies for public health and control of foodborne viruses. Identify data gaps and research priorities where it would be valuable to have more information. Report on these matters by January 2013 1. 1 Please note that the publication date of the report was delayed so as to be able to incorporate new data from a survey of the prevalence of hepatitis E virus in pigs. Given this delay the information in the rest of the report was brought right up to date.
